When one is seeking help for an addiction one wants to have the absolute best help imaginable and conceivable. One is not messing around when it comes to addiction. Addiction is a deadly serious activity and it can often mean the death of the individual. Addiction is something that needs to be dealt with but one must be cautious because if one tries to do it himself or herself he or she could die. This is why it is important to use the help provided by rehab addiction specialists at inpatient rehab programs. Some of the traits to love for in these individuals are:

Patience

As a counselor one definitely needs to have patience with ones clients as they process the discussion about addiction. It may take them time to accept certain things and to move towards positive changes. Some people need to discuss something many times before they are prepared to make a move in any particular direction in fact. Also, some counselors are not likely to see large changes in an individual client; therefore, one must be okay with incremental progress in their lives and rejoice over small victories instead.

Good Listener

Counselors spend a very significant amount of time listening to their clients. One will do more listening than talking actually, and this is good. One must be content to give the client time to express their story and their feelings. One will also need to be intuitive in discerning what the client is really saying and “read between the lines”.

Compassionate

It is really very important that one’s clients feel one’s compassion for their problems and that they sense that the counselor truly care about them. One may not be able to relate to every issue that is shared with him or her, but one need to be able to have compassion for how it feels to be in their shoes. Genuine concern yields positive results, of course.

Nonjudgmental

Counselors always hear all kinds of private information and encounter all types of people. A counselor may hear dark secrets from someone’s past involving such things as sexual or criminal behavior. One must do one’s best to refrain from judgment and instead communicate positive regard instead. There are times when it may be necessary to judge a particular behavior, but the client must not feel that one is judging them. Likewise, one may encounter clients of different races and/or cultures too. One must not push one’s cultural or religious views upon them at all. Multicultural competency is a necessary skill. The counseling environment needs to be a safe place for a client to share their most intimate concerns.

Empathetic

Empathy is key and it is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. One needs to be able to put oneself in the shoes of one’s client and understand the situation from their point of view. Even if one doesn’t actually agree with their perspective, one still need the ability to understand how it feels to them in order to address their issue effectively. However, it’s important that one is not too empathetic though. Some people struggle as counselors because they are unable to maintain objectivity and therefore carry home the emotional stress of the job into their own lives. The level of empathy necessary can be a fine line between helpful to client and harmful to counselor.

Self-Aware

A counselor who is aware of their own fears, insecurities, and weaknesses will be effective in the therapeutic relationship on a whole new level. It is important that one do not react defensively to what a client shares. One must be able to keep one’s own feelings out of the session too. One will be better able to do this if one are self-aware. In addition to that, self-aware individuals are more intuitive with regards to solving their own problems and can use that knowledge to help clients through similar situations.
